Honors 181: Mandatory Orientation Registration
What is Honors 181? This is your fall orientation session, held during the first two weeks of the semester. Honors 181 is a casual, 1-hour session consisting of a small group of fellow incoming honors students and facilitated by several honors advisors. As a new member of the L&S Honors Program, attendance at Honors 181 is required. Please note that if you do not attend an Honors 181 session you will not be able to make an individual advising appointment until the spring semester (though you will still be able to utilize drop-in and chat advising hours).
Who will be at Honors 181? You will be interacting with Honors Program advisors and fellow first-year honors students in this session. Bring your questions along, and take full advantage of this advising opportunity! How do I sign up? You will sign up for an Honors 181 session during SOAR, after you have finished registering for classes. If you were not advised by the Honors Program during SOAR, but you have been accepted as an honors student, you may sign up for Honors 181 by following the link on the right-hand side of our homepage. Please note that registration is only open (and the link is only available) during the summer and immediately before sessions are held each fall!
Go Big Read
Go Big Read is a free, optional series of events on campus for first-year and continuing students. Each year, UW-Madison selects a different book to generate campus-wide discussion and invites the author to speak on campus about his or her work. In addition, the Honors Program sponsors an honors only event each fall, granting students the opportunity to interact with the author in a smaller setting, often over a meal. For information on this year's Go Big Read selection, please visit the university Go Big Read website. For news on the honors only event, stay tuned in to Honors On-Line, our weekly e-newsletter, and the "Upcoming Events" box on our homepage!
First-Year Fall Retreat
The Fall Retreat is your first chance to network with a number of faculty who teach honors courses. During this informal retreat, you will learn how faculty became interested in their disciplines and became successful scholars; learn about research opportunities on campus; discuss the benefits of a "liberal arts" education; find out why it's okay to be undecided; and discover how to best engage in the social sciences, humanities or science disciplines. This event is optional, requires registration, and costs $15. It takes place each fall at the Pyle Center, and includes light morning refreshments and lunch. Pick up a registration form during your SOAR session, or contact the Honors Program to find out more!
Honors 182: Enrollment Workshop
After you have been on campus for a few weeks and settled into your courses, you will receive an email asking you to register for Honors 182: a mandatory, 1-hour session that covers the spring registration process, class-search techniques and scheduling skills. You will also learn how to read a DARS report -- a tool that monitors your degree progress and notes which liberal arts or major requirements you have yet to fulfill. These important skills will last you the rest of your UW career!
