L&S Honors Go Big Read Luncheon 2025: A Full House of Ideas

The L&S Honors Program’s annual Go Big Read Luncheon was a resounding success, filling every seat in the Pyle Center’s AT&T Lounge on November 4, 2025. Students, faculty, and staff gathered for an engaging conversation with Percival Everett, author of the Pulitzer Prize–winning novel James, this year’s campus-wide Go Big Read selection.

From the moment doors opened, the atmosphere was lively. Lunch was served as attendees settled in, and by noon, Everett took the stage, blending sharp insight with humor as he addressed questions from the audience. His wit and warmth made the discussion both intellectually stimulating and approachable.

Students came well prepared, asking exceptionally thoughtful questions about the novel, the writing process, and Everett’s broader experiences as a writer. Their curiosity and preparation drove the conversation, underscoring the Honors Program’s emphasis on student-led dialogue. Everett’s responses—often punctuated with humor—sparked laughter while also encouraging deeper reflection on the themes of James.

The event concluded with a brief book signing, giving students the chance to connect with Everett one-on-one. Copies of James were available through UW–Madison Libraries, Madison Public Libraries, and at the event itself, ensuring that the conversation could continue beyond the luncheon.

Importantly, the luncheon was made possible through Cronon Funds and in collaboration with other High Impact Practice Programs, highlighting the shared commitment across campus to provide transformative learning experiences.

This luncheon, smaller and more informal than the campus-wide keynote, highlighted the unique role of the L&S Honors Program in fostering intimate, high-impact experiences. By centering student voices and encouraging direct engagement with the author, the event exemplified the spirit of Go Big Read: building community through shared reading and dialogue.
