"In addition to bringing a passionate presence to all lectures, Professor Martin cultivates a classroom of intellectual curiosity in our AOS 101 Honors discussion on Friday afternoons. By enabling students to present on topics they are interested in each week (not limited to course material—can be anything), he enables me and my classmates to not only develop public speaking skills in a low-stakes environment, but more importantly, to create presentations that are comprehensible to other Honors students who may not have the same interests and understanding of a particular topic. Professor Martin is always exceedingly engaged in our presentations and the ensuing open discussion/debate, and I remember him being fascinated by the presentation that my classmate Daniel and I gave regarding bank failures. I have benefited immensely from exposure to a variety of perspectives and topics, much more so than if the discussion were restricted to conversation about Weather and Climate (which is also very interesting!) Professor Martin should receive the Distinguished Honors Faculty Award because of his relentless commitment to the Wisconsin Idea and his unique method of turning an elementary-level physical science class into a profitable discussion about anything and everything. There isn’t much more I could ask for from an Honors professor than what Professor Martin does."
