The L&S Honors Program awards study abroad grants each year, with students receiving grants funded either by Thomas and Debra Kurz or the Chuck Snowden Honors Directors’ Fund. Grants are awarded in two cycles, once in the fall and once in the spring. Please review the information below to determine the applicable application cycle.

What are the Kurz and Chuck Snowden Honors Directors’ Study Abroad Awards?
These grants award $1250 to eligible L&S Honors Program students participating in a UW-Madison academic study abroad program. Students spending either one semester or one year abroad may apply for this award, although preference is given to those participating in year-long study abroad programs. Summer abroad programs should be a minimum of three weeks in length and preference will be given to longer duration programs.
Who is eligible to apply?
You can apply for a Kurz / Chuck Snowden Honors Directors’ Study Abroad Award if you meet the following criteria:
- You are a currently enrolled L&S Honors Student (HLA, HM or Comprehensive Honors)
- You have applied to a UW-Madison-approved academic study-abroad program for the appropriate term (outlined above)
- Please not that internships are not eligible for this award.
How are recipients chosen?
Kurz and Chuck Snowden Honors Directors’ Study Abroad Award recipients are selected by members of the L&S Honors Program Senior Staff. They will evaluate your application based on the following (in no particular order):
- Strength of written statement(s)
- Financial need*
- Cumulative GPA
- Previous Honors course experience
- Preferred characteristics of the selected study abroad program, which may include:
- Language immersion (as determined by UW International Academic Programs)
- Program duration
- Honors Program affiliation (preference may be given to students selecting to study at either of the two Honors-sponsored study abroad programs.
*We recommend all applicants complete the most recent version of the FAFSA.
What is the application process?
Please complete the Kurz and Chuck Snowden Honors Directors’ Study Abroad Award application on WiSH. The application will ask a series of questions related to your intended abroad experience.
When is the next application due?
Applications for the Fall 2024 cycle is now open. Please search for the application on WiSH. Applications must be submitted by Sunday, September 29, 2024 at 11:59 PM.
