On September 18th and 19th, the Wisconsin Speech and Debate team members kicked off their debate season by competing at Carroll College’s “The Sir” teaching tournament. Sophie LaRose and Julia Wiessing reached the open semi-finals, where they debated the motion “It is in the interest of the West to engage with the Taliban as the new legitimate government of Afghanistan.” It was both of their first breaks, and it was Julia’s first tournament. Julia was the only novice to make it to the semi-finals.
